As part of Fort Stanwix National Monument’s commemoration of the 240th anniversary of the British siege of the fort, Canadian author and historian Gavin K. Watt will present a program on the siege at 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 19th, in the reconstructed fort’s visitor contact station. In addition, Mr. Watt will be on hand in the park’s visitor center throughout the day to give informal talks, Q & A sessions, and book signings. A selection of Mr. Watts books will be available for purchase in the park’s Eastern National bookstore inside the visitor’s center.
Gavin Watt has studied the roles of American Loyalists and Canada in the American Revolution for forty years and has 11 books published on the subject. His extensive research on the American Revolution in the Mohawk, Schoharie and Cherry Valleys is reflected in his books “Rebellion in the Mohawk Valley” (The siege of Fort Stanwix and the Battle of Oriskany in 1777) “The Burning of the Valleys” (The raids on the Schoharie and Mohawk Valleys in 1780), and his newest book “Fire and Desolation” (the Wyoming and Cherry Valley raids in 1778). Mr. Watt is also an avid living historian who has reenacted in 4 different historical time periods and is the founder and past commander of the recreated King’s Royal Regiment of New York, which recreates an American Loyalist group that helped carry out many of the raids detailed in his books. Mr. Watt is also an honorary Vice President of the United Empire Loyalists Association, a group of history enthusiasts and American Loyalist descendants dedicated to studying and honoring the role of the loyalists in the history of Canada.
