This is a traditional holiday custom that dates back to the fourth century. This festive event was brought to America by the early Dutch and German pioneers, and is observed at Fort Klock on the first Sunday in December each year. It is a prelude to the holiday season and a very special day for children. Presents were received on St. Nicholas Day, that is preserved through colonial music, homemade cookies and gingerbread, hot chocolate, and spiced cider. All children will receive a homemade wooden ornament from St. Nicholas. In addition the Tryon County Militia will drill, there is a storyteller, roaring fires, pine bough decorations and a tree.
