A Strategic Dam

“Here was built a dam the summer of 1779 by the soldiers under Gen. Clinton to enable them to join the forces under Gen. Sullivan at Tioga.” Hauling 208 boats and all their supplies from Fort Plain and Canajoharie on the Mohawk River, making military history in the process, the engineers and men of General Clinton built a dam across the outlet of Otsego Lake. When the dam was breached, the rush of water propelled the boats many miles down stream on their way to meet up with Gen Sullivan and his troops. A ride along the river reveals a landscape little changed from that time.
